Saas, Bahu and Sequins!

How would you know that you have switched on a saas bahu serial? Simple, sequinned sarees! Yes, the bling is good! And it isn't even the classy kind, sombre yet sparkly. Oh no! That just won't do. It has to be gold on red or green or silver on pink! Talk about coloured nightmares :P
Anyway, the point is that they are a trademark of most of the content on Indian television. They aren't new to us! While they started appearing on occidental runways in the past year, the vamps and the bahus alike were wearing since time ( well..television actually or cable tv really) unknown
Good news, things are more realistic now. Serials seem to be reflecting real life now. First it was farmers, and now the middle class. This means that cotton sarees, with simple borders and slightly dull colours became the uniform for the bharatiya nari. But did the sequin brigade go under cover? Of course not, they are still there, with diamonds and all. And, I assume, the viewership hasn't diminished either. However, the rise of realistic TV seems to have shown that we have had an overdose of the unreal, sparkly, dramatic world of saas-bahus and resurrections. We want our own self on the tv, in a bus or hurrying to catch a train. But, the fact that the sequinned serials run, shows that we want our share of drama, where someone else is the victim. It is an escape. But how much, is too much? Here, it is realistic TV. You can take your pick, cotton or chamak, realism or escapism. Its up to you.....
Wait, how did i forget to mention vampires???
